Effective Ways to Recycle Factory Wastewater Using Reverse Osmosis

In the modern industrial era, wastewater management is no longer simply about discharging water that meets quality standards into the surrounding environment. A true strategy for efficiency and sustainability lies in a facility's ability to reuse that water.

Implementing a factory wastewater recycling system with reverse osmosis has proven to be one of the most reliable methods for producing high-quality clean water.

Factory Wastewater Recycling Steps Reverse Osmosis

Technology Reverse Osmosis (RO) fundamentally operates by forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane using high pressure to separate water molecules from microscopic particles.

However, pouring raw wastewater directly into the RO module is a fatal technical error as it will cause severe clogging. Therefore, recycling the factory's wastewater is essential. reverse osmosis Effective engineering requires a step-by-step process engineering.

1. Pre-Processing Stage

Before entering the RO unit, wastewater must be freed from its organic load, ammonia, and suspended solids. Modern biological treatment processes such as Membrane Bio Reactor (MBR) or Key benefits of MBBR (MBBR) is generally applied as the vanguard of pollutant decomposition.

After the organic load is decomposed, the water must be processed through the module Ultra Filtration (UF). UF system that uses a membrane Hollow Fiber PVDF material with a pore density of 0.1 to 0.01 micrometers acts as an absolute physical barrier.

This pre-treatment stage filters out bacteria, macromolecules, and suspended solids to produce water with a turbidity level below 0.5 NTU. This low turbidity is essential for protecting the performance and lifespan of the RO membrane in subsequent stages.

2. Core Purification Through Reverse Osmosis Membrane

After passing the UF stage, the water is then pumped using high pressure into the RO core module. The RO membrane is specifically designed for brackish water conditions (Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis) generally use polyamide materials (Polyamide) configured Spiral Wound with very extreme pore sizes, namely below 0.001 micrometers.

In this crucial phase, dissolved contaminants such as heavy metals, mineral molecules that make up the water Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), as well as other specific pathogens will be retained and separated into a concentrate stream. With salt rejection capabilities (salt rejection) which reaches more than 90%, this system produces water permeate which has a very high level of purity.

Understanding the Difference between BWRO and SWRO in Modular Systems

In advanced purification installations using membrane technology, they are generally divided based on the type of raw water being processed, namely: Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis (BWRO) and Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO). Both have fundamental differences in technical specifications:

Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis (BWRO)

This system is specifically designed to treat brackish water or deep well water with a high level of purity. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) input below 1,500 ppm. BWRO operates at a maximum pressure of 10 Bar, providing a water recovery rate (recovery) 55% to 85% with salt rejection more than 90%.

At Hydromaster, the BWRO facility consists of several standard types that can be selected according to operational needs, namely:

Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis (BWRO)

Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO)

This system is intended for desalinating seawater with extreme salinity, with a TDS of up to 38,000 ppm. SWRO requires special materials because it operates at much higher hydraulic pressures, up to a maximum of 60 bar. recovery is in the range of 35% to 45%, but this system is able to withstand salt (salt rejection) up to more than 98%.

At Hydromaster, the SWRO facility consists of several types, namely:
