Naturally, the movement of water (osmosis) always flows from a dilute solution to a more concentrated one. However, reverse osmosis is a technology that reverses this natural law by forcing high-salinity contaminated water through a filter toward the clean water side. This forced flow is achieved through the hydraulic thrust of high-pressure pumps that overcome the natural osmotic pressure threshold.

The key strength of this purification system lies in a semi-permeable membrane with a pore size of 0.0001 microns, which serves as the heart of the filter. Implementing this technology provides the benefit of guaranteeing a consistent supply of high-standard pure water.

How the Reverse Osmosis System Works

To produce water with extreme purity levels, the system goes through a series of physical separation processes. Here are the primary stages:

  • High-Pressure Injection: A high-pressure pump forces the raw water at high velocity against the membrane wall.
  • Pollutant Blocking: Impurities, minerals, and bacteria are completely blocked because their physical sizes are significantly larger than the 0.0001-micron pores.
  • Flow Separation: Purified water molecules that pass through are collected as Permeate (product water). Conversely, retained pollutants are flushed away and discharged as Concentrate (waste stream). As a result, this process continuously generates a fraction of rejected wastewater.

System Types Based on Water Concentration

Depending on the salinity level of the raw water being treated, this filtration technology is divided into two primary operational types in the industrial sector:

  1. Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis (BWRO)

Ideal for treating fresh water, brackish water, or recycling industrial wastewater. This system generally operates at pressures between 150–200 psi, offering a salt rejection capability of approximately 97 percent.

  1. Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO)

Engineered specifically for seawater desalination. This unit requires extreme pump pressures in the range of 600 to 950 psi, achieving a salt rejection rate of up to 99.9 percent.
