Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF)

Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF)

What is Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF)?

Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) is a technology for separating suspended solids, oil, grease, and light contaminants from wastewater by utilizing micro-sized air bubbles.

Unlike sedimentation processes that rely on gravity, DAF lifts particles to the surface using air bubbles, allowing contaminants to be separated more quickly and efficiently. This technology is widely used as a pretreatment process and as part of industrial wastewater treatment systems.

Hydromaster provides DAF systems designed to suit wastewater characteristics, installation capacity, and effluent quality targets for a variety of industrial sectors.

How Does DAF Work?

In a DAF system, some of the treated water is pumped into a pressure vessel and mixed with compressed air. When the pressure is released, micro-air bubbles form that adhere to suspended particles, oil, and grease.

Particles that have adhered to the bubbles will rise to the surface to form a flotation layer which is then collected using a skimmer system, while the processed water flows to the next processing stage.

Advantages of Dissolved Air Flotation

  • Effectively Removes Oil & Grease
Very effective for separating oil and grease from industrial wastewater.
  • Reducing Suspended Solids (TSS)
Helps reduce suspended solids content before biological processes.
  • Improving WWTP Efficiency
Reducing the load on biological processes thereby improving the performance of wastewater treatment plants.
  • Smaller Footprint
Requires a more compact area than conventional sedimentation processes.
  • Fast Process
Produces separation of contaminants in a relatively short time.
  • Easy to Integrate
Can be combined with MBR, Aeration System, Clarifier, or Sludge Dewatering.

Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) FAQs

What is Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF)?

DAF is a wastewater treatment technology that uses micro air bubbles to separate oil, grease, and suspended solids from water.

What is the difference between DAF and sedimentation?

Sedimentation relies on gravity to settle particles, while DAF uses micro air bubbles to lift particles to the surface, making it more effective for light contaminants such as oil and grease.

What industries are suitable for using DAF?

DAF is widely used in the food and beverage, oil and gas, petrochemical, pulp & paper, textile, seafood processing, and various industries that produce waste with high oil or suspended solids content.

Can DAF be combined with other technologies?

Yes. DAF is often used as a pretreatment process before aeration systems, MBR, reverse osmosis, and other wastewater treatment systems.

Does Hydromaster provide installation and operation & maintenance?

Yes. Hydromaster provides complete services, from engineering and fabrication to installation and commissioning, operator training, and operation and maintenance.
