How a Dissolved Air Flotation System Works
The flotation of impurities is achieved through a precise sequence of hydraulic pressurization and air injection steps:
- Coagulation and Flocculation
Raw wastewater is first mixed with coagulant and flocculant chemicals in an initial tank to bind micro-impurities into larger clumps (flocs).
- Pressurized Air Injection
A portion of clarified effluent is pumped back into a specialized saturator vessel. In this high-pressure tank, air is dissolved into the water until fully saturated.
- Micro-Bubble Release
The air-saturated water stream is suddenly released into the main flotation tank. The sudden pressure drop instantaneously generates millions of microscopic air bubbles.
- Flotation Process
These micro-bubbles attach firmly to the flocs, raising them rapidly to the surface to form a thick foam layer (sludge blanket).
- Skimming

What Is the Difference Between DAF and SAF?
In industrial wastewater treatment, you may also encounter the term SAF (Suspended Air Flotation). While both systems serve to float light pollutants, they differ fundamentally in how they generate air bubbles.
In a DAF system, air is dissolved into water under high hydraulic pressure, so when the pressure is released, the bubbles generated are extremely microscopic and uniform.
Conversely, an SAF system generates bubbles mechanically (using vortex generators or specialized pumps) without dissolving air under high pressure.
As a result, bubbles in SAF systems tend to be larger, making them well-suited for coarse waste but less optimal for lifting fine particles compared to DAF technology.
